While Russia and East European nations have dominated gymnastics over several decades, Sri Lanka is yet to reach dizzying heights at the international level. Unlike most Olympic sports where size matters; gymnastics enables those with slighter frames to excel and this plays well with the Sri Lankan physique which is known to be petit. At the Asian Youth and Junior Weight Lifting Championship 2012 held in Myanmar, he clinched 1 gold and 2 silver medals. Ekanayake is the reigning Sri Lankan national weight lifting champ in the Under 50 kg weight category and was ranked 3rd in the world under the same weight group for 2012. Crysbro is performing an excellent service to the nation through ‘The Next Champ’ by spotting and nurturing talented individuals such as Shashika Ekanayake, who have been a source of pride to all Sri Lankans. This program  also gives prominence to individuals from sports which do not enjoy the limelight as much as cricket. While Sri Lanka has a long way to go in terms of creating world-class champions, The Next Champ is certainly doing a creditable job of unearthing individuals with exceptional potential. Being chosen as The Next Champ casts the selected individual as a role model whom other young men and women can emulate and bring credit to Sri Lanka. Upcountry Lions Sports Club (ULSC), sponsored by Crysbro, has registered an astounding performance in the Sri Lanka A-Division Rugby Tournament 2012. As neophytes to the highly regarded A-Division, the performance of Upcountry Lions was sensational, considering the formidable opposition they had overwhelmed; which Includes the highly accomplished naval squad.

Rugby, which has hitherto been the game of the ‘elite’ schools in the country, has hardly made its impact in the rural hinterland, where many potential star players await discovery. With a view of promoting the game among the rural youth, Crysbro has initiated a series of programs in the hill country; which is regarded as the heartland of rugby in Sri Lanka.

This hardly comes as a surprise, as Crysbro achieved nationwide renown for their ‘Fresh Upcountry Chicken’ over the past 40 years by situating their farms and state-of-the-art processing plants in the salubrious climes of the central highlands.

Crysbro regards their sponsorship of ‘Upcountry Lions’ as the first step in taking rugby right down to the grassroots level throughout the country. The company is currently engaged in promoting rugby among a number of schools in the Central region. The choice of rugby is noteworthy, as it is a sport which combines the best of teamwork, discipline, strategy and strenuous training, while instilling self-confidence in the players.

It should be remembered that Sri Lanka, with more than 103,000 rugby players, is the second largest rugby- playing nation in Asia after Japan. Thus achieving a higher ranking among rugby playing nations in the Asian region is well within the reach of Sri Lanka, if sufficient attention is given to developing and harnessing the talents of potential players across the country.

Since rugby is a game which requires players of considerable strength and stature, Crysbro chicken, which is rich in muscle-building protein and low in fat, can play a substantial role in contributing towards players ‘nutritional needs. In this regard, the initiative of Crysbro in promoting rugby across all segments in Sri Lanka is laudable indeed.

"Once we give the chicks, we follow up the progress and our veterinary doctors are available for any help", he added.

In addition to meeting the local market requirements the Crysbro Management is now eying to expand their products to the international market.

The Chairman of Farm’s Pride expressed concern over the amount foreign exchange, the country spends to import chicken feed. He is in the process of setting up a local chicken feed plant at Kurunagala.

MD Imitiaz ruled out any possibility of bird flu cases in the country and called upon the government to focus attention on the issue of taxes in the chicken industry. He further added that only chicken farms have to pay a tax and that chicken could be sold at a cheaper price, if the government is ready to waive the tax, which has been forced on the industry.
